Applications for the Rhodes Scholarship 2027 are open now. This is the fully funded scholarship that sends Pakistani graduates to the University of Oxford — and it is one of the very few world-class awards where Pakistan has its own dedicated allocation. If Rhodes doesn’t work out or you want to keep your options open, see our roundup of top fully funded scholarships for Pakistani students 2026–27, including Chevening (UK) and DAAD (Germany).
Deadline: 23:59 PKT, 5 August 2026. There is no application fee.

Some context on how selective this is: the first Rhodes Scholar from Pakistan went to Oxford in 1951, and in the 75 years since, more than 70 Pakistanis have held the award. That is roughly one a year, historically. Two are now available annually.

What the Scholarship Covers
- Full Oxford course fees
- Annual stipend for living costs, paid monthly
- Two economy flights — to the UK at the start, and home at the end
- UK student visa fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge (NHS access)
- Settling-in allowance on arrival in Oxford
- Oxford application fee, once you have been selected
The scholarship normally runs for two years, and up to three years for certain DPhil courses. The stipend is calculated for one person — it is not enough to support a spouse or children, and the Rhodes Trust states this plainly. Plan accordingly.
Eligibility for Pakistan
- Citizenship: You must be a citizen of Pakistan and hold a Pakistani passport.
- Age: There are strict date-of-birth windows. Check the eligibility checker on the Rhodes website — this is not a rule they bend.
- Academic record: You must meet the entry requirements of your chosen Oxford course as a minimum. In practice, successful applicants exceed them. The Rhodes Trust states that candidates have a greater chance with First Class Honours or a GPA of 3.70/4.00 or above.
- English: You must meet Oxford’s English language requirement for your course.
Use the official eligibility checker before you do anything else. The age and education criteria are precise, and hundreds of hours have been wasted by applicants who assumed they qualified.
What Rhodes Actually Selects For
This is where most applicants misread the scholarship. Academic excellence is the entry ticket, not the deciding factor — every shortlisted candidate has strong grades. The criteria have been in place since 1902 and they look for:
- Academic excellence — the baseline
- Energy to use your talents fully — demonstrated through sport, music, debate, theatre, dance, or similar, particularly where teamwork is involved
- Truth, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy for and protection of the weak, kindliness, unselfishness and fellowship
- Moral force of character and instinct to lead
Read that second and third criteria again. Rhodes is not looking for the highest CGPA in the country. It is looking for someone who is academically serious and has done something real outside the classroom that involved other people.
What You Need to Submit
- Online application form
- Academic transcripts — Matriculation, Intermediate (or O-Level and A-Level statements of result), and undergraduate results, formally certified by your school, college or university
- CV — see our CV writing guide if you need to prepare one from scratch
- Personal statement
- Academic statement explaining your proposed Oxford course
- Four referees, submitting references through the online reference form
- A head-and-shoulders colour photograph (JPG)
Everything must be in English. If your birth certificate, passport or transcript is in Urdu, you must upload a certified English translation alongside it.
About Your Referees
Contact them now, not in late July. Four references, each written independently, on letterhead, signed, in PDF, submitted through the Rhodes online system before the same 5 August deadline. Referees are busy people and a rushed reference reads like a rushed reference.
The reference must be written by the referee, in their own words. Drafting your own reference for someone to sign is a breach of the applicant declaration.
Be Honest — They Check
The Rhodes Trust is explicit about this, and it is worth quoting the substance of it: applicants must declare that their application is wholly accurate and a fair representation of their achievements, and should anticipate that details will be checked for embellishments and inaccuracies.
If they suspect a reference, transcript, identity document or English test result is not genuine — or that you have materially misrepresented your qualifications or achievements — the National Secretariat investigates. An application can be withdrawn, and an already-granted scholarship offer can be revoked.
Do not inflate a two-week internship into a leadership role. It is not worth it.
The Selection Timeline
- 5 August 2026 — application and all four references due
- Applications checked for eligibility and completeness
- Shortlisting
- October 2026 — interviews in Lahore. The Rhodes Trust pays domestic travel within Pakistan (round-trip First Class rail equivalent), but not hotel expenses. Our interview preparation guide covers general interview strategy that applies here too
- Outcome communicated to all applicants
- Selected scholars then apply to their Oxford course, with support from Rhodes House
Note the order in step 6: you apply for Rhodes first, and to Oxford afterwards. A lot of people get this backwards.
If You Are Unsuccessful
You may re-apply only once more, and it must be in the same constituency, subject to still meeting eligibility. So you have two attempts in total — do not treat the first as a practice run.
The Trust does not provide feedback to unsuccessful applicants.
