Most CVs in Pakistan are rejected in under thirty seconds — and usually not because the candidate was unqualified. They are rejected because the CV made the reviewer work to find the relevant information, and the reviewer had two hundred more to get through.

This guide covers what actually works for Pakistani government and private sector applications, and where the two differ.

Government vs Private: Know Which You Are Writing

These are not the same document, and using one for the other costs you interviews.

What screening looks forEligibility: does this person meet the stated criteria?Impact: what has this person achieved?
Length2–3 pages acceptable; completeness matters1–2 pages; brevity matters
DatesCritical — experience is counted preciselyImportant, but flexible
ToneFormal, factual, completeResults-focused, tighter

The core insight: government screening is a filter — it asks whether you clear the bar. Private screening is a comparison — it asks whether you are better than the next candidate. Write accordingly.

The Structure That Works

1. Header

Name, city, phone, email. That is it.

Use a professional email address. ali.hassan.malik@gmail.com reads as an adult applying for a job. gangsta_boy_lhr@gmail.com does not, and reviewers do notice.

For government posts, add CNIC, date of birth and domicile — these are used for quota and eligibility checks.

2. Professional Summary (3–4 lines)

State what you are, how long you have done it, and what you are applying for. No adjectives about your personality.

Weak: “I am a hardworking and dedicated individual seeking a challenging position where I can utilise my skills and grow with the organisation.”

Strong: “Civil engineer with 8 years in highway and bridge construction, including 3 years as site engineer on a Rs. 2 billion NHA project. Applying for Assistant Director (Engineering), BPS-17.”

The second one tells the reviewer, in one line, whether to keep reading. The first tells them nothing about you at all.

3. Experience (Reverse Chronological)

Most recent job first. For each role: designation, employer, city, and exact month-year dates.

Then two to four bullets. Each bullet should say what you did and what happened as a result — not what your job description said.

  • Weak: “Responsible for managing the sales team.”
  • Strong: “Managed a 6-person sales team; grew regional revenue 34% over 18 months.”

Numbers work because they are checkable and specific. Even approximate ones (“roughly 40 clients”, “a team of 5–7”) beat vague claims.

For government applications, never leave a date gap unexplained. A blank year between two jobs raises questions. If you were studying, unemployed, or abroad, say so in one line.

4. Education

Highest qualification first. Degree, institution, year, and marks or CGPA.

Include Matric and Intermediate for government posts — advertisements frequently specify minimum marks at those levels. For private sector roles, drop them once you have a degree and a few years of work behind you.

5. Skills

List concrete, verifiable skills. Software, languages, certifications, technical competencies.

Cut anything unfalsifiable. “Good communication skills”, “team player”, “hardworking” — every CV in the pile says this, so it distinguishes nobody. Skills that can be tested belong here; personality claims do not.

Formatting Rules

  • Send PDF, not Word. Word documents reformat themselves on other machines and your layout collapses.
  • Name the file properly. Ali_Hassan_CV.pdf — not cv final final 2 UPDATED.pdf.
  • One standard font throughout. Calibri, Arial, or Times New Roman at 10–12pt.
  • No photo unless the advertisement explicitly asks for one.
  • No graphics, no colour blocks, no charts. They break automated screening systems and look unserious to government reviewers.
  • Proofread it. Then have someone else proofread it. Spelling errors on a CV signal carelessness about everything else.

Tailor It — Every Single Time

This is the step almost everyone skips, and it is the one that matters most.

Read the advertisement. Note the exact phrases it uses for the requirements. Then make sure your CV uses those same phrases where they honestly apply to you.

If the advertisement says “procurement planning and contract management” and your CV says “purchasing work”, a screener scanning for the required skill may not connect the two — especially when they are working through hundreds of applications against a checklist.

To be clear: match the language, never invent the experience. Claiming skills or years you do not have is not tailoring — it is fraud, and in government recruitment it can disqualify you permanently.

Mistakes That Get CVs Binned

  • Sending the same CV everywhere. The single most common and most costly mistake.
  • Listing duties instead of achievements. Your job description is not interesting; what you accomplished is.
  • Padding to fill space. A tight 1-page CV beats a padded 3-page one.
  • Missing or vague dates. For government posts, this alone can sink you.
  • Overstating language or software ability. It gets tested at interview and the collapse is worse than never claiming it.
  • No cover letter when one was requested. Requested means required.

A Final Note

A good CV cannot get you a job you are not qualified for. What it can do is make sure that when you are qualified, the person reading it can see that in the first thirty seconds.

That is the entire job of a CV. Everything above is in service of that one thing.
